Karl Rene DeRouen, 1934-2010.
Karl DeRouen died at his home March 24, 2010 after a lengthy illness. He
was born in Eunice in 1934 and graduated from St. Edmund's in 1952. He
attended LSU and the University of Houston. Karl was in broadcasting
from 1952 until 2007 when a stroke ended his career. He won numerous
civic awards and honors including the Rotary Club's Citizen of the Year
and the Distinguished Alumnus Award of St. Edmund's. Karl was also
recognized in a speech made in honor of his many years of service to
Eunice and broadcasting which was spoken on the floor of the United
States House of Representatives. He actively supported St. Edmund's and
Eunice High and was known as the voice of the Bluejays and Bobcats for
many years. "King", as he was known, also volunteered his time as
Master of Ceremonies to numerous pageants, award shows and events. Karl
was a member of the Rotary Club and participated in many of the Eunice
Player's Theater productions.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferdinand and Agnes DeRouen,
brother Rodney DeRouen of Eunice, and sister Mercedes Reed of Mamou. He
is survived by his wife Sheila; daughter Anne DeRouen Jasien and her
husband Thomas of Sugar Land, Texas; son Karl Rene DeRouen Jr. and wife
Haidee of Eunice; grandchildren Nicholas Jasien, Amelia Jasien and
Tucker Jasien of Sugar Land, Texas; Pierre DeRouen, Isabelle DeRouen,
and Fernand DeRouen of Eunice. He is also survived by Dr. FJ DeRouen Jr
and his wife Joanne, sister Norma Langley and Sherry Larson and her
husband Terry, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Karl was a friend to all and a stranger to no one. His love for Eunice
knew no bounds.
