The family of Isaac “ Jack” Jackson Burson, Jr. shares the passing of Jack on Monday, October 28, 2024 at the age of 85. Visitation will be Friday, November 1, 2024, from 3:00-8:00 PM at Quirk and Son Funeral Home in Eunice with a Read Obituary
I met Mr. Burson through one of my best friends from law school, his brilliant son, Ben. I remember him as soft-spoken, strong and though I didn't know him well, I know that to raise a son like Ben, he was a special person. Thinking of Ben and all who loved Mr. Burson.
Jack Burson was the consummate Southern gentleman: highly intelligent, articulate, gracious and of high moral character. His accomplishments at USL and Tulane Law School were legendary. Jack could have risen to great heights on the statewide political scene but chose instead to devote his talents and energy to the practice of law and to serving his community. He was a genuine Christian, a devoted family man and a true friend. He was a strong, skillful advocate for his clients but never strayed from being professional and courteous toward his opponents and respectful to the courts. There was an aura about him that commanded, not demanded, admiration and respect. He was truly a giant in the legal community of St. Landry Parish. I was fortunate to have worked with him on a number of legal matters and feel privileged to call him a close personal friend. It can be truly said of him: "Well done, my good and faithful servant." One of the most intelligent and affable men I have ever known in my more than four decades of covering the St. Landry Parish political arena .
Jack had a lighthearted but deep knowledge of the way politics works in the parish and he was able to convey those sentiments to all who knew him both personally and professionally.
He handled his duties as legal advisor for both the School Board and then Police Jury with an erudite yet firm hand and he was respected for that. He provided sound guidance for both of those political bodies who often had the inclination to seek counsel elsewhere.
Jack could have written the handbook on how to manage the political games played between elected officials and their constituencies.
