IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert James
Fontenot
September 28, 1959 – February 6, 2026
Robert James Fontenot, age 66, passed away on February 6, 2026. He was born on September 28, 1959, in Mamou, La, and was a resident of Eunice. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Eunice. Robert was the son of the late McKinley and Clothilde Moreau Fontenot. He dedicated more than 30 years of his life to nursing, including 20 years of devoted service in the Emergency Department at Opelousas General Hospital. Robert deeply loved his work family there and took great pride in caring for others. In recognition of his compassion, commitment, and excellence, he was honored as the 2024 Emergency Department Employee of the Year. Known for his sharp wit and infectious sense of humor, Robert could light up a room and make even the hardest days a little easier for those around him. Outside of work, he was a devoted LSU fan—especially when it came to LSU football—and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on the Tigers. In his earlier years, he also enjoyed playing tennis and was a member of the men's tennis league in Eunice. Robert is survived by his daughter, Isabel Fontenot and her fiancé, Andrew Street; his son, Ethan Fontenot; his brother, Phillip Fontenot; his sisters, Charlotte Fontenot and her husband Rayford, and Dianna Long and her husband Jerry; his niece, Adrienne Fontenot; and his nephew, Kevin Fontenot. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Community Hospice of Lafayette, with special gratitude to his nurse, Megan Soileau, who also had the honor of working alongside Robert in the Emergency Department at Opelousas General Hospital. Robert will be remembered for his dedication to healing, his love for his family and coworkers, and the laughter he generously shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him.
