Gregory Eugene
Savoy
Jan 8, 1954 — Oct 9, 2026
Basile, La
A loving and courageous man, Gregory Eugene Savoy departed this life on October 9, 2026, at the age of 72. Gregory, born on January 8, 1954, in Mamou, LA, and resident of Basile, LA, passionately devoted his life to his community and family. He was a man of unwavering strength and compassion, always placing the needs of others before his own. A devoted father and grandfather, Gregory's love knew no bounds, and his legacy continues to live on in the hearts of those he touched.
Gregory, a proud retiree of the Evangeline Parish School Board, had a profound impact on countless lives throughout his career as an educator at Basile High School. When he wasn't in the classroom, he was cheering from the sidelines as the "voice of the Basile Bearcats," serving as the announcer for the football games for many years. He also found joy in coaching high school football and basketball, and the time and effort he invested in his teams were a testament to his love for sport and his commitment towards nurturing young talents.
Beyond his work, Gregory was a man of many hobbies and interests. He loved hunting, bass fishing, and playing cards, especially bourré. He had a skill in welding and woodworking, and he was an ardent fan of LSU sports. Among his many accolades, Gregory proudly served as the Fire Chief from 2012-2024 and was a lifetime member and first responder of the LA Fire Association.
Gregory leaves behind his loving daughters, Kelsey Savoy Darbonne (Dylan) and Olivia Savoy Glasscock (Kyle). He took great pride in raising his daughters, embracing every part of being a “girl dad” with love and devotion. That same love extended to his nine cherished grandchildren, Mali and Saylor Rodriguez, Rowen, Hayes, and Bronx Darbonne, Hadleigh Cormier, Odin, Violet, and Riley Glasscock. He showed up for every sporting event, cheering them on with pride and making sure they always knew their grandfather was in their corner. He is also survived by his niece, Tricia Williamson; and great nieces and nephews.
Gregory was preceded in death by his parents, Edway and Margery Davis Savoy; brother, Charles “Spider” Savoy; and his godchild, Shannon Savoy.
A visitation will be held on Monday, October 12, 2026, from 11:00am-10:00pm at Quirk & Son Funeral Home in Eunice. The funeral home will reopen for visitation on Tuesday at 8:00am. A rosary will be prayed at 9:30 AM, followed by the funeral service at 10:00 AM. Deacon Gary Gaudin will lead the rosary and officiate the funeral service.
A Firefighter's Prayer
When I am called to duty, God wherever flames may rage, give me strength to save a life, whatever be its age.
Help me to embrace a little child before it's too late, or save an older person from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert to hear the weakest shout, and quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me, to guard my neighbor and protect his property.
And if according to your will I have to lose my life, bless with your protecting hand my loving family from strife.
