Bertha Lucille Frey Fontenot passed away quietly, with her family at her side on Wednesday afternoon, August 21, 2013. She was 90 years old. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday August 23, 2013 at 11 AM at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Mowata. Father Joseph Tran will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery in Mowata. A Rosary will be prayed by the St. Lawrence Ladies Altar Society at 7 PM on Thursday. Bertha was born on September 20, 1922 in Frey, Louisiana to Julius and Lydia Frey. She attended St. Edmunds School in Eunice and trained as a nurse at the old hospital in Eunice and worked there. Through a fellow nurse, she met the love of her life, Dewell J. "Gene" Fontenot. They married on September 6, 1949 and were happily married for 48 years until D.J. passed away in 1997. Bertha is survived by her son, Robert L. Fontenot and wife Margaret; and her daughter Janet Fontenot. She is preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Lydia Sonnier Frey; her sisters, Agnes Bischoff and Christine Stefanski; her brothers, Harry, Gus, Will, Winston, Oscar, Raymond, Henry, and Lawrence Frey; and an infant brother At the request of the family, visitation will be held on Thursday August n22, 2013 from 2 PM to 9 PM at Quirk & Son Funeral Home in Eunice. The funeral home will reopen at 8 AM on Friday for visitation until time of service. Quirk & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
